Flow – what is it and how can you use it

Kalana contacted me the other day.  She is a student of Astrogem Geomancy — in fact she’s one of The Sixteen Hundred — and she asked about Flow.

The concept of Flow is so big and so important that I thought I’d write up the answer and expand on it.  I’m going to share with you:

  • Why you need to know about Flow
  • What it is
  • How you can start using it today

. . . in order to connect more easily with others, to develop your intuition and find the right time and way to express your uniqueness.

Why do you need to know about Flow?

If you are going to give someone a geomantic reading you need to know the background and context in which they are operating.  This is their current state.  It is how they are currently ‘conversing with the Universe’.  It will show you how they fit in their current circumstances.

You will want to find out, for example, if there. . .

  • Is there an unused opportunity
  • Is there a problem stopping them from progressing
  • Is some way they can help the Universe or those around them
  • Is some way they can help themselves

Knowing what that state is, therefore, is the basis that will help you give them an accurate intuitive reading.

What is Flow?

Flow is the way things are changing all around you.

It is the ocean of events, personalities, circumstances, energy, interests, objects, plans and motivations which surround you right now.  It is the ever-changing-woven-pattern-of-life which interacts with the direction, opportunities and possibilities of life at that moment.

However you imagine it, Flow indicates what is happening now and the direction in which events and circumstances are likely to change.  It is unpredictable because everyone is weaving their own bit of the tapestry.  But when you know the Flow you will know how you can make a difference.

Flow applies to all of us.  We are all ‘in Flow’.  Your activities, your plans, what happens to you and to everyone around you is part of Flow.  Flow is the background and context of your life and actions.

Your actions affect others and others’ actions affect you.  We are in a web of interconnectedness.

When you help others contribute and grow we all benefit.  We need uniqueness – yours and theirs.

When that uniqueness is expressed it helps the world become better just a little bit – one mind, one heart, one day at a time.  (I’ll say more about this in another post.)

In the same way that ‘a butterfly flapping its wings can cause storms’ you can have an effect.  Everything you do – or don’t do – has a potential effect.

I think that this is a delicious idea:  During the reading the two contexts, their Flow and yours, intermingle.  You are part of each other’s lives at that moment.

Links. . . Interconnectedness. . . Patterns.

Your uniqueness is what makes the difference in how you interact in Flow which in turn makes a difference to all of us.

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.”

― Anita Roddick

When you think about this deeply and you start to feel Flow you will begin to feel a sense of presence and potential.

And even though the whole of Flow is vast you can appreciate it and find where you are.

How, well firstly you can feel it (see below).

Secondly, you can discover it.  That’s where the geomantic Oracle comes in.

The Oracle gives you a sketch of the Flow.  It shows you where you are and lets you use your own thoughts and intuition to fill in the details.

There is a tide in the affairs of men…

Knowing the Flow you can see when is the opportune time and the inopportune time.

You can see when it is high tide and you can set sail to new ventures.  You can see where you might use your uniqueness and capitalise on your strengths and abilities; you can see where you might help, make improvements and contribute to all life.

You can see if it is low tide, when you can do some necessary barnacle-scraping in readiness for the journey and do some repairs.  You can see if it is time for you to prepare, to learn or to re-think something.

When you feel Flow – when you can sense the presence and potential – you will know the tide and know what you can (or might) do.

How do you start to feel Flow?

You can use the following exercise to help get you started.  I do it every day to help me feel more grounded and connected with all life.

  • Find a nice quiet spot – preferably outside – where you will be undisturbed for a few minutes.
  • Take a few deep breaths and clear your mind.
  • Begin by feeling all the external physical circumstances under your feet: the Earth, the surroundings, trees, wind, rocks, ocean, all plant and animal life.  Be aware of them interacting and being interconnected
  • Now think of your internal physical world.  Think of everything physical around you that is yours.  Feel the presence of local objects and your personal physical resources
  • Next, feel your internal mental state – your ideas, thoughts and state of mind
  • Now feel the external mental world of ideas, thoughts of others, plans, heavenly influences, motives and spirit.

(Astrogemers will recognise the Four Levels model here.)

Feel each one of these realms forming a huge interconnected woven cloth of Flow.  Really feel it.

Know that you are part of Flow, too.  It starts from your core and extends to every other thing in the biosphere – to everything in Gaia.  You are part of everything and everything is part of you.

Know that you can both sense and react to Flow and the changes in Flow.  Know that Flow will sense and react to you.

By sensing all these interconnections your intuition will open and you will begin to hear the ‘bubbling conversation of the Universe’.

This is Flow.

Is there any disturbance there?  Is there any tension you can detect?  Are you being ‘asked’ for something?  Flow will let you know if there is a misstep in the dance – something you could, or should, be doing.  You can feel that for whoever you give a reading to, too.

This is the first step in developing your intuition – to know the background of events, the context of life and its actions and interactions.  It is the first step on the path to developing and expressing your uniqueness. . . to find out what you can give or what you need to learn.

There is pattern.  There is sequence.  There is Flow.

“There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.”

Brutus, Julius Caesar, Act iv, Scene iii
